ORIGIN:
David Glasgow Farragut (Earth, 1801-1870).
American naval commander, born of Spanish origin near Knoxville, Tennessee.
Entering the navy in 1810, he saw service against the British in 1812, and
against pirates in 1820. In the civil war he served with the Federal forces
and commanded the armament fitted out for the capture of New Orleans (1862).
He took part in the siege and capture of Vicksburg (1863), and destroyed the
enemy's gunboats in Mobile Bay, leading to the town's surrender. He was made
vice admiral, the grade being created for him by special act of congress,
as was also that of admiral (1866).
